James Holt once more strikes gold with his latest single ‘Make My Day’, released on June 11th, it maintains James’ 70s influences, being his most Beatlesesque so far.
‘Make My Day’ could’ve been taken off of ‘All Things Must Pass’ by George Harrison, but also has a John Lennon flair, with James’ awesome preppy guitar work, and his vocals are seriously like velvet, working effortlessly with the instrumentals. James also provides the backing vocals adding a depth seen in songs by The Beatles, such as ‘If I Fell’ or ‘In My Life’, the sound is close harmonies, but with himself, creating a sound that is rarely heard with only one vocalist. It also creates an element of the Everly brothers, a smooth soulful vocal, this is equal parts relaxing and entertaining. The song was wonderfully produced by James Skelly of The Coral, and Chris Taylor in Liverpool’s Parr Street Studios.
In terms of lyrics this song feels like a warm hug, the words are poetic as usual, and you can’t help but smile at the sweet sentiments established throughout - its imagery of the elation of having someone wish to spend their time with you is infectious, and sets up the atmosphere of the whole song. James consistently writes songs with a flow that just seems effortless, he is clearly a skilled songwriter both lyrically and instrumentally.
Great review of a great song!
