Nile Marr has struck it solo, and last Friday (6th of September) he released Part Time Girl. The indie-pop vibe is a tribute to the young man’s talent, not to mention the work of his bandmates Callum Rogers and Aden Peets.

Marr has just recently finished a short tour circuit with his dad Johnny Marr (former Smiths guitarist), and, in July, Nile performed as part of the Tramlines Fringe (a gig which I was lucky enough to attend), he previewed Part Time Girl at Dot to Dot Festival, and teased it being a single on his Instagram, but at the time didn’t give any more away. Nile also appeared on BBC Introducing performing ‘Teenage Kissers’ which is also rumoured to be another single.

Musically, the song is upbeat and has a danceability that one would expect from an indie-pop number, the guitar has that trademark Marr jangliness, but it is very obvious Nile is carving his own way through the industry. Callum has worked with Nile since his days in the band Man Made, who released on album in 2016, and his playing is very strong on the single, and is paired perfectly with Aden’s drumming, creating the beat that you can move to. However I think that the song isn’t designed to be danced to, but it is obvious that this can be played at gigs as one of those stellar tracks that really gets the crowd going.

Nile’s ability is clearly inherited off of his dad, but he doesn’t rely on his father’s fame to promote himself, it is clear that Nile is working towards making his own mark, along with the single, Nile released some Merchandise, including a tote bag, a lighter and some stickers emblazoned with ‘Yes, I’m Johnny Marr’s Son’ – which I imagine is a poke at people asking him if he is indeed Johnny Marr’s son.

I really look forward to what Nile has to offer next, whether that be ‘Teenage Kissers’ or another track that he has in the works, but I truly hope we will get an album, accompanied with a short UK tour, as it is clear to me this young man has music in his blood, and that he will go far in the music world.

Part Time Girl is out now on many music streaming services, and YouTube.
